Untuk Ho-ting addresses the exploitation of the rhinoceros hornbill, a striking Southeast Asian bird threatened by hunting and rainforest destruction. Revered in many local cultures and Malaysia’s national bird, it is targeted in part for its casque, the horn-like structure above its bill, while widespread deforestation continues to destroy the mature forests it depends on for nesting and survival. In response, I incorporated Anjan wood to evoke both the bird’s natural habitat and the destruction of that environment. The hornbill perches on a branch sculpted in Mitsuro Hikime wax, preserving an organic, fluid form that suggests the living soul of the forest. Set within the bird’s belly is a Tahitian baroque pearl pierced by an arrow, symbolising both the soul of the bird and the violence of targeted hunting. Through this piece, I hoped to invite reflection, spark curiosity, and raise awareness of the beauty and vulnerability of endangered birds.
