Across opposite oceans, a takahē and an Atlantic puffin are united by a struggle for survival. Each life begins with few chances, one egg for the puffin, only a small clutch for the takahē, so every egg and chick carries a heavier weight. A ruby sits where the egg would be, cradled by two beaks, while danger gathers close through hunger and predators. Pierced voids around them give absence a shape, the food that does not arrive, the resources taken from their worlds without warning. Set into patinated copper, the piece holds the contradiction of habitats that look magnificent while demanding everything from the creatures within them. A narrow rim of gold frames the oval like a halo and a memorial, honouring what is sacred and marking what has begun to vanish. Separate environments, the same pressure, and the same question: what do we choose to protect?
