The Black Fisher and the Glint began with a photograph of a double-crested cormorant that I found unexpectedly captivating. I wanted not only to look at the bird, but to feel the depth I saw in the image, so I translated it into a carved relief. Ebony allowed me to work with darkness, fine detail, and contrast, while a turquoise cabochon forms the cormorant’s vivid eye. Gold and silver foil are applied to the beak, reflecting the yellow and grey tones of the species.
The title presents the bird as a dark fisher, a quiet hunter of water and depth. “The Glint” refers to the eye, the metallic beak, and the small flash of life held within the black wood.
